Gaining practical experience at GÖRG - A field report
An interview with Seren Alma about her first practical experience at GÖRG as a working student in the field of employment law and the balance between theory and practice.
I have been supporting the employment law team in Cologne since October 2018 and am currently preparing for my first state examination.
Contrary to my fears, I was not thrown in at the deep end at the beginning of my work, but was taken by the hand. Especially at the beginning, I received intensive support, the partners and lawyers explained the facts and, above all, the context to me in a calm manner and I was always given the opportunity to ask questions.
A classic task involves one of the partners or lawyers describing a situation to me and introducing me to a specific problem. Through research, I work out possible solutions, put together appropriate solutions and present these to the client. Contrary to what you might expect, I am given time for constructive feedback and ideas for further development.
This gives me the feeling that I am making a valuable contribution. I also write regular notes and oversee the internal GÖRG newsletter from the employment law department. In this newsletter, for example, upcoming court decisions, legislative projects and media coverage of topics relevant to employment law are presented and updated monthly - this gives me a great overview of employment law, which is also beneficial for my exam preparation.
My work as a student trainee has strengthened my ability to think and ultimately work in a solution-oriented manner. Especially in cooperation with one of my responsible partners, Dr. Wilke, I learned to analyze problems, collect possible solutions and ultimately work out the best way to solve them. This understanding gives me a great advantage in practice, as I can apply the theory much better.
A great side effect of my work as a student trainee is that I get lots of tips from my team on exam preparation. And of course it's a welcome change to swap the library for an office with a view of the cathedral and the Rhine at GÖRG and to put my knowledge into practice.
My recommendation: immerse yourself in practice at an early stage - start applying theory in practice and gain valuable experience. Last but not least, it makes the theoretical content much more tangible.
